Fishing rod blanks are made of a carbon fibers composite or prepregs (= pre-impregnated) produced by the chemical industry with a long and costly procedure. The vast majority of carbon composites are not used to make fishing rods but have endless applications in larger sectors of the industrial world like the automobile and aerospace industry.
A composite is basically a material made of two or more different materials. In a carbon composite the carbon fibers are reinforced in a polymer matrix (e.g. polyester or epoxy).
But, first of all, is the raw material made out of carbon or graphite? Can we say graphite or carbon blanks? Answer: actually we can say both. We can say carbon thinking of the atoms, the "material" at the base of the "stuff" we hold in our hands, and we can say graphite as well thinking of the molecule and thus the structure that the carbon atoms have.
So, in a carbon fiber composite, the raw material, the "carbon" is in its graphite form: hexagonal rings bond together in a ribbon structure (yes, not exactly in a plane like in the graphite of a pencil). The structure is very flexible, resistant to stretching, strong, and light. Perfect to make a fishing rod!
A fishing rod company which makes their own blanks must know which composite to order since the prepregs can differ in purpose, composition or fiber type, orientation, resin content, and weight per square meter.
Sometimes, along with
carbon fibers other fibers like glass-fibers, boron or ceramic are mixed together to form different layers And a
fishing rod blank manufacturer can often use three or four different prepregs at the same time, each for a different section of the rod.
Now, there are many types of carbon fibers: IM6, M8, M55, M40, M40J, M46J, T300, HR40, and more. Each have their own properties: which are the modulus and the strength. Good fishing rods have generally speaking a high modulus, a high strength, and intermediate percentage of fibers.
Modulus is the ratio (expressed in millions of psi, "pounds per square inch", a measure of a force on an area) between stiffness and weight of the
graphite blank. The higher the modulus, the more energy the
rod can store and release. The energy is a way of saying the speed and the power of the rod. Think of a swimmer on a diving board and try to imagine to variate the properties of the jumping board and you will see what it is. The higher the modulus, the more expensive is the blank and also more brittle the blank after an impact. Some also like to say that modulus is the resistance to flex. The higher the modulus, the more expensive is the blank and also more brittle the blank after an impact.
As a consequences, if you are new at building custom rods, stay away from top modulus blanks and rather use a mid-range modulus.
Now, let's go back to the carbon composite and let's say you are a fishing rod manufacturer and are going to make a blank. When it arrives, it is tough but "floppy" it. To transform it into a fishing rod, you need to do three things: design its shape, apply heat and pressure, cool it down and finish it.
A lengthy, sophisticated process which requires machineries which the average hobbyist cannot afford. But anyone can buy rod blanks of the same quality of their brand names today directly from the manufacturers themselves or their wholesaler.
Bamboo rod makers, on the contrary, can make their own rod from the raw material, "tonkin" cane, keeping control of all the elaborate process at every stage, especially when it comes to design the taper and so the action of the rod.
Tonkin cane is actually bamboo of the Pseudosasa Amabilis species and the best quality comes from bamboo plantation in the South West China.
So, you only need to find a bamboo broker, or importer to start making your own bamboo rod. An enthralling experience which is witnessing a Renaissance today.
Ice fishing is a popular sport the farther north you go, but it's not quite the same as traditional fishing. Ice fishing is usually done in huts on a frozen lake. These huts have holes cut into their bottoms for fishers to access ice, drill holes and drop their
bait into the lake. Ice fishing requires a short rod because of the space constraints and holes in the ice that can be the size of a baseball or smaller. You can go to an
outdoor recreation store and buy one, or you can make one at home for a fraction of the cost.
Things You'll Need:

Ice Fishing Rod Making Instructions:
Find a dowel (a solid cylindrical rod) between two and four feet long or make your own from scratch wood. The rod stem should be around 3/8 of an inch thick.
Find a tip top that will fit the end of your rod stem and glue it on. Tip tops are the pointed covers on top of the fishing rod with a guide that absorbs much of the pressure when a fish bites and pulls on your fishing line. The tip top should be able to fit snugly over the end of the rod. You can try using one from an old fishing rod or buy one at a fishing supply store.
Attach two or three fishing line guides with either glue or tape. These are rings through which the
fishing line will pass. Place them at one foot intervals, keeping the guides in line with the guide on the tip top.
Choose material to use as a rod grip. Cork grip is a popular choice, or you chould choose to wrap a durable rubber grip around the base. If using cork, cut a hole about the diameter of your rod in the middle.
Coat the handle end of the rod with epoxy and place the handle on it. Allow to dry before using.
Tip & Warning
If you don't have suitable material for making a handle, you can try using the rod without it. You might need a glove to avoid wearing your hands out.

How To Choose A Fishing Rods And Reels

Spinning rods have a straight handle also, but the line guides are larger and on the bottom of the rod. The spool is not covered allowing the fishing line to release faster so it casts farther.
Baitcasting
A baitcasting rod can have either a straight handle or a grip like a pistol. The reel and line guides are mounted on top of the rod. line spool turns as you cast and must be controlled properly to avoid snarls. This is probably not the right fishing rod and reel for a beginner.
Flyfishing
Flyfishing tackle is different from all other types. The reel is used only to store the line. Rods are chosen by weight. A rod with a smaller number will cast a shorter distance. How far you want to cast depends on where you are fishing.

I'd never heard of noodling before watching this, so I'm no expert, but both of the guys who pull the fish out mention the fish being in a "box". So to me it sounds like they trapped them first, then stuck their arms in and pulled them out of the trap. Hats off to 'em anyway, that's the ballsiest way to land a fish I've ever seen.

No... its a box used for a home for the fish... we have never used them.. but they are usually like 2-3 feet wide, about 4 feet long, with an entrance of about 16"X16" square about a foot long before opening up into the bigger section.. they use these boxes to know where the fish will be... like using rocks/stumps without the debris... a little safer too... cats will usually claim a box before turtles...

I doubt they can even do that. They do have really small teeth. and there jaws are pretty strong. But I have never had more then just the top of my hand bleeding. However, when you put your hand in that hole, you definitely need to watch out for snapping turtles. them things can take limbs off.

I saw a documentary about this awhile back, you have to be nuts to go feeling around in those holes. There isn't just catfish in them, snapping turtles, snakes and as one guy found out, beavers. A guy grabbed one by the balls and his arm doesn't function right to this day.

Catfish are predators. Generally you can find them in holes or burrows or on the bed lying in wait for smaller fish. They stick their arms into the burrows/holes and the catfish thinks it's a smaller fish. It attacks by Swallowing/inhaling, thus the reason their arms are down the throat and through the gills. These guys are beasts in their own right.

The males find holes in boat ramps, rocky areas, and underneath submerged brush and logs and they wallow out the spawing ground and prepare for the females. If you get them in the heat of the spawn you can pull several fish from one spot. The males defend the nest voraciously and strike at any threat, including your hand.

Casting Corn Method

Set up your fishing rod. (tie hook to the end of the line and add a small weight.)

Get a can of creamed corn and open it.

Grab a handful of corn and throw it into the water.

Put about 2 pieces of corn onto the hook and put it in the water. (Note: you don't have to cast the line. It just has to be about a meter or 2 away from you and be ready to put it in the water when needed.)

Wait at least about 10 minutes. (make sure not to make any movement. Carps are very sensitive to movement.)

If a carp has eaten your corn, you will feel a tug and that is when you very quickly raise your fishing rod.

Hold the rod straight with the tip facing skyward.

Keep the tension on your line, because if the line goes slack the fish can spit the hook.

Don't let the carp go around a log or stone.

The carp will eventually tire out and that's when you reel it in.

if you live in california, go to yosemite. then ask a ranger or something how to get to mammoth lakes. When you get there, you can rent cabins. go to lake goerge and in the way back, use this fly or a royal wulf I caught 8 15 inch rainbow and brook in like an hour.

For years fishing rods were made of solid materials such as wood, bamboo, and metal, but in more recent years advances in using fiberglass and carbon fiber materials have led to increases in rod strength and flexibility while simultaneously reducing the weight of the rod itself.
As the use of carbon fiber rods becomes more popular in Europe and around the world, a number of advances in using carbon fiber for fishing rod construction have been made. By using different grades of carbon fiber and different construction techniques, rods of varying flexibility can be created which give anglers a degree of control over their casts that would previously be thought impossible. As this technology continues to develop, the limits of what is possible with a fishing rod are going to continue to expand until the future of angling has a precision that modern anglers wouldn’t even dare to dream.
What Is Carbon Fiber?
Of course, to understand how carbon fiber technology is improving sport and recreational angling it’s important that you understand exactly what carbon fiber is in the first place. Though there are many products which can fall under the name of “carbon fiber”, the term basically refers to a number of products which are made using carbon filament threads.
These threads are bundles of carbon filaments which are woven or bound together, and a single carbon filament thread can contain thousands of filaments.
Once made into carbon filament threads, there are a variety of different ways that this thread can be used. Some manufacturers use the carbon filament thread as a means of simply reinforcing another material such as molded plastic, while others weave the threads into sheets of carbon fiber cloth and then use this cloth in the materials that they construct. The rod that is made will differ greatly depending upon the method that is used, and differences in strength and flexibility can also exist depending upon the grade of carbon fibre material that is used to make it. There are a number of different types of carbon fibre threads and materials which can be used in the manufacturing process depending upon the qualities that the manufacturer wants the fishing rod to have as well as the price that they want the rod to sell for in the end.

The quality of carbon fibre materials used in rods can vary from one manufacturer or product line to another, so it’s important that you realize that just because one carbon fibre rod acts in a certain way it doesn’t mean that all rods made of or containing carbon fibre materials will have the same characteristics.

One of the largest areas in which carbon fiber fishing rods is becoming popular is in Europe, where the rods are a favorite for use in coarse fishing. Another major advantage of carbon fibre rods is the added strength that the carbon filaments add to the material as a whole. This means that your rod is going to be much more difficult to break or damage than it would be if it were made of other materials; this helps when dealing with especially large or strong fish, as well as in those moments when you snag something under the water or get your line tangled and haven’t realized it. The durability of carbon fibre rods can outlast that of even some metals or reinforced materials.
The Continuing Evolution of Carbon Fibre Technologies
As time continues to pass and carbon fiber rods become more popular in different parts of the world, more and more applications will likely be found for carbon fibre materials in angling products and fishing rods.
