The Ice Rod Making Instructions (5 Simple Steps):
-
Find a straight tree branch, then trim it. This means removing all protruding branches and twigs. You might need a knife to accomplish this. You'll want your branch to be roughly the size of a standard fishing rod and around the same height as its intended user. When it comes to ice fishing in particular, the fisherman typically holds the rod at a sharp downward angle, which can cause the wrist to become sore after a while. Consider, then, using a branch with a slight curve on the end to use as your handle – a curve which will allow you to grasp the branch without having to twist your wrist downward. -
Purchase fishing line and a fishing hook. Hooks come in all shapes and sizes, so consult with the salesperson about the types of fish you aim to catch in order to determine the appropriate size. -
Cut a piece of fishing line that is the same length as your fishing rod. Use the knife to cut a groove around the end of your rod, then tie one end of the fishing line to this grooved end, fitting the line tightly into the groove so it cannot slide. -
Tie the end of the fishing line to the hook. -
Attach some bait (for ice fishing, this may mean some sort of grub, or a shiner or minnow) and go fish.
Tip & Warning
Fish hooks can be dangerous. Children attempting to make their own fishing rods should be supervised by an adult.

How To Choose A Fishing Rods And Reels
Leaning how to choose the right fishing rod and reel is the first step in discovering a fun and relaxing new hobby. Fishing tackle is the term used to describe the equipment fishermen use to catch fish. The pole is the simplest piece of fishing tackle and may be made of inexpensive materials like cane and bamboo, or more expensive materials like fiberglass.
When you choose the right fishing rod and reel to use, you need to consider what type of fisherman you want to be and what type of water you will be fishing in. Equipment failure when you are about to land the big one is not fun.
Saltwater Fishing
Fishing tackle for saltwater fishing cannot be made with any aluminum, steel or iron parts because the saltwater will corrode them. They must be stainless steel or nickel. If you are saltwater fishing inshore, use ultra-light equipment. For deep-sea fishing, much larger and heavier tackle is necessary.
Ice Fishing
Ice fishing requires specialized equipment. Rods between onef oot and three feet in length are used. Simple reels hold the line. Some ice fishermen choose to use tip-ups which fit over the hole they have cut in the ice, and when a fish hits a lever releases and a flag tips up and alerts the fisherman.
Other Types
Other type of fishing include still fishing, drift fishing, bait casting and fly fishing to name a few. There are four types of rods and reels to be considered when choosing the right fishing rod and reel for any of these types of fishing.
Spincasting
Spincasting is great for beginners . The rod has a straight handle and small line guides. The reel is attached to the top of the handle and the line comes out of a small hole in the cover on the front of the reel.
Spinning Rods and Reels
Spinning rods have a straight handle also, but the line guides are larger and on the bottom of the rod. The spool is not covered allowing the fishing line to release faster so it casts farther.
Baitcasting
A baitcasting rod can have either a straight handle or a grip like a pistol. The reel and line guides are mounted on top of the rod. line spool turns as you cast and must be controlled properly to avoid snarls. This is probably not the right fishing rod and reel for a beginner.
Flyfishing
Flyfishing tackle is different from all other types. The reel is used only to store the line. Rods are chosen by weight. A rod with a smaller number will cast a shorter distance. How far you want to cast depends on where you are fishing.

People said about this catfish fishing video:
-
i have never heard of that type of noodling but im not going to say your wrong. These catfish are in holes with thier eggs down there. And they are teritorial so when something gets close to thier eggs they charge and they bite thier arm and they just hang on!
-
I'd never heard of noodling before watching this, so I'm no expert, but both of the guys who pull the fish out mention the fish being in a "box". So to me it sounds like they trapped them first, then stuck their arms in and pulled them out of the trap. Hats off to 'em anyway, that's the ballsiest way to land a fish I've ever seen.
-
I have never heard of trapping the fish in the box or anything. The way i have done it and the only ways i have heard of is to find thier holes, but i really dont know what they are talking about. they could be in a box
-
No... its a box used for a home for the fish... we have never used them.. but they are usually like 2-3 feet wide, about 4 feet long, with an entrance of about 16"X16" square about a foot long before opening up into the bigger section.. they use these boxes to know where the fish will be... like using rocks/stumps without the debris... a little safer too... cats will usually claim a box before turtles...
-
aahhh gotcha. the way me and my friends do it is to find a catfish hole and just do it that way. but thanks for clearing that up.
-
no problem... we dont use boxes either... supposed to get some bigger cats using boxes, but we've gotten a few 40's and accidentlly let out a few 60s
-
hey this vidoe kicks butt man and i love it i <3 noodling even i have never done it before it looks fun!!!!! =]
-
o u damn city slickers just cant handle it thats y u use fishin line ..aint no rush other than stickin yur hand in a big ole flathead den and pullin out a 60 pounder...u fellas handfish on ...its that time a year right now thats y i looked this up on here..
-
Do the cat fish lay eggs in a huge hole or somthing? Also never stick your fingers out, you could lose em, best to hold it int oa fist.
-
I doubt they can even do that. They do have really small teeth. and there jaws are pretty strong. But I have never had more then just the top of my hand bleeding. However, when you put your hand in that hole, you definitely need to watch out for snapping turtles. them things can take limbs off.
-
I saw a documentary about this awhile back, you have to be nuts to go feeling around in those holes. There isn't just catfish in them, snapping turtles, snakes and as one guy found out, beavers. A guy grabbed one by the balls and his arm doesn't function right to this day.
-
That's how we do it in Oklahoma! If you have never went noodle'n then you haven't fished! The only thing I want to know is where they were fish'n? The biggest I ever got was 38 pounds down in Broken Bow, on the beavers bend river.
-
boy thats excatly how i fish down here in south la in galliano and hell no im not cujan,or coon ass in red neck all the way the biggest i caught was 43 pounds i had to get my dad to help me get it in the boat
-
what they basically do is feel around near logs, holes, root wads, etc. until they feel a fish then they just pull it out. I'm pretty sure in most states it's illegal, I live in Texas and I'm pretty sure it's illegal here.
-
how the hell they do this? i read about it but still don't get it
-
Catfish are predators. Generally you can find them in holes or burrows or on the bed lying in wait for smaller fish. They stick their arms into the burrows/holes and the catfish thinks it's a smaller fish. It attacks by Swallowing/inhaling, thus the reason their arms are down the throat and through the gills. These guys are beasts in their own right.
-
The cat fish are not so much preying on their arms as, the best season to do this is when they're spwaning.. the females lay eggs in the holes then the males go in to defend the eggs, you put your hand in and boom they bite ya.
-
Wrong Wrong Wrong Jsimp! When we "noodle" we are looking for the fish to be nesting. This happens in the summer when the water temperature is right for the spawn to occur. The males find holes in boat ramps, rocky areas, and underneath submerged brush and logs and they wallow out the spawing ground and prepare for the females. If you get them in the heat of the spawn you can pull several fish from one spot. The males defend the nest voraciously and strike at any threat, including your hand.
-
wicked your stupid they put boxes in the water and let the girls lay eggs and then the males gaurd them thats when they stick there hnd in there and let them bite them or they find real catfish holes in the river
-
Pulling fish out of a box. Are you kidding me.Where's the sport in that.Hunting and Tattoos.Along time ago people ate what they hunted.A long time ago you had to be tough to get a tatoo.now every wuss has one.

Carp Fishing Tips
-
-
You can also boil potatoes slightly and substitute that for the creamed corn.
-
Let the fish "win" the first round of the fight, if there is no place for it to swim into and snag the line. This will make it easier to reel in.
-
If possible, have a friend or family member help you pull the fish in.
-
You should loosen your drag when fighting the fish. Once you have it worn out and by the dock or boat, tighten the drag and "bring it home".
-
It's good to bring a net to hold your fish.
-
Bring an additional fishing rod, this will raise the chance of a carp biting the hook.
-
Be patient. Carp have good senses, often at times a lot of Carp are lost to impatience.
-
Always pull the rod back in the opposite direction of the fish, if you keep the rod straight it will create an easy getaway plan for a carp.
-
Have a net that you can put your fish into then stick the net back into the water and secure it using a rock. This will keep your catch alive for some time.
-
Remember the thinner the line and the smaller the hook the more Carp are going to bite. This will make it harder to reel it in because it is easier for them to break the line.
-
Bring plenty of hooks because the hook can be ripped off by a monster fish or even sea weed and kelp.
-
A lot of times kelp or sea weed would get caught in the hook.

Bait Corn Method for Carp Fishing
-
Find a river. Carp can be found in most rivers all year round.
-
Search for a spot to set up your fishing rod. A flat large rock would be fine. Set up your rod.
-
Take a few pieces of canned corn and put it on the hook. It depends on how big the hook is.
-
Cast the line and position your rod in a 45-50 degree angle. You can use a rock or a log to hold the rod up.
-
Take about a handful of corn and throw it near the place where you cast your line. This will help to draw in the fish.
-
Wait for the fish to bite.
-
When the fish bites you will see your rod moving, grab the rod and immediately pull the rod up in the opposite direction of the movement of the fish.
-
Keep pulling and at some times let the fish swim away from you but immediately pull back. The bigger the fish the harder it is to pull the rod.
-
Wait and before you know it the fish would have gotten too tired to put up a fight. As soon as you feel the calmness of the line reel in your catch.
How to Сatch a Carp? Exhaust the Fish Method
-
Let out as much line as possible after the initial strike and pull. The fish will be off guard and thus easier to pull in.
-
Reel in slowly and steadily. These fish will pull back hard if they feel threatened. As the fish tires, move the tip of your rod back and forth. This may seem unorthodox, but the fish will lose it's ability to thrash with all it's fins.
-
Remember that if no net is available, do not grab the carp by the lip as you would a bass. this is difficult and could tear the jaw of the fish. Put one hand under the fish in front of the tail, and one between the head and stomach. Hold it firmly, but do not squeeze. If it's a catfish, you may have to go in to the water and haul it out whole.

Steps
Casting Corn Method
-
Set up your fishing rod. (tie hook to the end of the line and add a small weight.)
-
Get a can of creamed corn and open it.
-
Grab a handful of corn and throw it into the water.
-
Put about 2 pieces of corn onto the hook and put it in the water. (Note: you don't have to cast the line. It just has to be about a meter or 2 away from you and be ready to put it in the water when needed.)
-
Wait at least about 10 minutes. (make sure not to make any movement. Carps are very sensitive to movement.)
-
If a carp has eaten your corn, you will feel a tug and that is when you very quickly raise your fishing rod.
-
Hold the rod straight with the tip facing skyward.
-
Keep the tension on your line, because if the line goes slack the fish can spit the hook.
-
Don't let the carp go around a log or stone.
-
The carp will eventually tire out and that's when you reel it in.
